"On 16 November 2021, REINZ filed submissions on the abovementioned Bill designed to improve housing supply in New Zealand’s five largest cities by speeding up implementation of the National Policy Statement on Urban Development (NPS-UD) and enabling more medium density homes to be built.
Broadly speaking, REINZ supported the Government’s objectives to accelerate the supply of housing where the demand was high, to increase housing development capacity and offer New Zealanders a wider variety of housing options to suit their needs at different points in their lives, and for legislation to address the housing affordability issue present in New Zealand. However, whilst broadly supporting the premise for housing intensification, REINZ’s submissions reminded the Government of their obligations (to ensure the success of the Bill) that appropriate infrastructure was needed around intensification of housing zones to ensure the quality of each New Zealander’s social and wellbeing, as well as the communities’ wellbeing, were not detrimentally affected."
