Common questions

What is the difference between REINZ and the REA?

The REA (Real Estate Authority) is an independent government agency (crown entity) that regulates the New Zealand real estate industry.

REINZ and the REA are not the same organisation.

The purpose of the REA is to ‘promote and protect the interests of consumers buying and selling real estate, and to promote public confidence in the performance of real estate agency work’ (REA website, 2022).

The REA manages important regulatory compliance matters such as registering and renewing real estate licences and managing complaints.

REINZ works closely with the REA, but we are a not-for-profit, voluntary membership organisation that advocates for our members, and provides products and services to enable our members in their profession.

How do I become a REINZ member?

Real Estate Authority (REA)

The REA is the licensing and regulatory body for the real estate industry. It’s an independent government agency that sits under the Ministry of Justice.
